OUR PETS
Sam, Zoe and Salem
Zoe came to us in July 1999. Our son had a friend who was between
apartments and needed somewhere for her cat to stay for a "few days". Although John had problems with
cat allergies we said we would give it a try for a day or so. Well Zoe arrived and in true fashion who did she take to
from the start.....yep the one with allergies...John. Surprisingly he did not seem to react to her...no sneezing,
no runny nose and no itchy eyes. That was not the only surprise. We found out that Zoe was days away from
having babies. By the end of the week we had fallen in love with Zoe and decided that once she had her babies,
that we would adopt one of her sons. Meanwhile Zoe's owner was having great difficulty in finding a new apartment
so we let her move into our spare room "temporarily". On July 26, 1999 Zoe gave birth to first her son
Sam and then daughter Salem. After the two births she began to hemorrhage and we had to rush her to the vet for an
emergency spay.
Meanwhile flash ahead to 10 months later....Zoe, Sam, Salem and their
owner are all still living with us. At this point due to differences in lifestyle I had to ask the cats owner to
find a new living arrangement. Sam was to stay with us as our adopted pet. Zoe and Salem were to leave with
their owner. I was very sad to think of the happy little cat family being split up after living together for this
length of time. I asked the owner to consider letting us adopt the other two cats. She left the cats with us
for another month and at the end of that time, she agreed that they were better off staying with us and so we adopted
them as well. That is how we ended up with 3 cats.
Sam is an orange tabby and the real "character of the
litter". He definitely has his own personality. He is a real "Daddy's Cat" and follows John
every where. He sleeps curled up at John's feet. If John leaves the room and Sam doesn't see him go, he will sit
there and cry until someone calls him and tells him where Daddy went. Of course being a Daddy's cat means that
Daddy is the one that has to get up at 4:00 a.m. when his royal highness decides it it breakfast time and won't take
"No" for an answer....oh yeah John has tried to say No but Sam has a whole routine to show that "No"
is not acceptable. A few pats either side of the cheek, a little paw in the mouth, a loud howl and maybe sitting
on the alarm clock and bat at the snooze button until the radio comes on. Yep he has it all down pat! Sam is
very compassionate and if any of his fur or human family is ill, he will stay by their side until they are well again.
Zoe is also an orange tabby...darker than Sam and is a cuddler......she
loves to lay beside you and have her tummy rubbed or her ears scratched. She is a very quiet cat and you scarcely
know that she is around......well at least until she wants to be fed....a girl after my own heart....when she wants food
in her dish she will certainly let you know. And she is picky.....if there is a single layer of dry food in her
dish....that is not for her.......she will let you know without a doubt that she wants FRESH food.
Salem was a black and orange tortoise cat. She was what they call
apple headed ... her face was much more pug nosed and rounded than the average cat. Salem was Sam's sister.
She was a very skittish cat that hid the moment anyone was in the house other than John and I. We do not know why
but in October 2007 she suddenly stopped eating and developed advanced fatty liver disease. With many tears we
sadly had to let her go. In the evenings I still look over at her favorite spot on the couch and expect to see her
dark eyes and little black nose looking up at me.
